Café-hopping in Johor Bahru (JB) – Malaysia!

Posted on Posted in Desserts, Food, Halal, Mains, Travel

“Most of them are easy on your wallet”

Café scene in JB has been booming in recent months, particularly with the tempting exchange rate in Singapore. With just a checkpoint away, most of the cafés in JB are flooded with Singaporeans rather than the locals. To be honest, the gap in prices is irresistible. Imagine the prices are either similar pegged to or cheaper than SG cafés menu, but the currency is Malaysian Ringgit! What are you waiting for?!

1. Faculty Of Caffeine

Google map led a group of strangers to the same place – but we cannot locate the café. We found 2 groups of Singaporeans who were stuck at the same place and we combed several corners, but to no avail. Thanks to Burpple map (click on the map), it brought us to the right direction! The café offers the usual brunch, coffee and dessert menu. We agreed that the dessert that left a better impression was salted caramel affogato!

Self-acclaimed Malaysia’s first container cafe concept, the café is located within a large container. The café offers customized drinks where you can start by choosing a base (tea, milk tea, coffee, fresh milk or smoothies), flavours (ranging from caramel, honey, winter melon to fruits), toppings (ranging from pearls, coffee jelly to vanilla puddings) followed by sweetness level (0%, 50% or 100%). Otherwise, you can also select their premium flavours such as Thai milk tea, Vietnamese coffee and Chai latte. A perfect place to grab a drink to combat against the hot weather!

One of my favourite café with Bev C apparels and accessories found at level 1 and Bev Café located at level 2. You can find different kinds of seats in the café and there is even a bed and sofa! Simply indulge in the cozy environment and enjoy their signature chocolate mint pie. Do not miss out ordering their house special Espresso ice cube (with milk, chocolate + milk or caramel + milk) and tea ice cube (lemon tea, ginger lemon and peach) where the ice cubes are infused with the drink flavours. Refreshing indeed without any dilution!

6. TIP, The Ice-Cream Project

Adopting a self-serve concept, you are expected to find your own seats, order at the counter and self clean up after that. This is a good initiative to motivate civic-mindedness among individuals! Anyway, TIP makes their own ice cream using fresh milk and their recipes are vegan-friendly. Upon ordering, you can get to enjoy watching the ‘live’ preparation of your ice cream. The flavours include original, vanilla, chocolate, brownies & cream and butterscotch. They also serve hot baked cookies and beverages. Don’t forget to take a picture with the swing outside TIP!

Located at a small alley, there is a small signboard that indicated ‘Coffee Valley’ and you can find an open door with a staircase leading to the second level. The food menu includes snacks (garlic bread, meatballs etc.), salad, soup, croissants, sliced cakes and a wide variety of waffles with both savory and sweet versions. Good news for small eaters or those who are too full from the whole list of places to caféhop, red velvet and tiramisu flavours are only available in the size of 2 quaffles!

Do note that certain flavours like fried chicken waffle are only available at the Sutera Mall branch.

8. OIC – Oh IceCream

P1010658_p

A new shop found at KSL City Mall, they serve home-made ice cream with more than 10 flavours to choose from such as coconut, blueberry yogurt, bubblegum etc. after choosing the flavours, there are over 15 choices of toppings to complement your ice cream such as honey starts, pretzels etc. So what’s with the hype since it is just an ice cream shop? The presentation is aesthetically pleasing with dry ice dog effect!

Do not miss out ordering the ice cream pot version that comes with 3 scoops of ice cream and 2 toppings. The set also comes with a cute little glove, a quaffle with honey sauce, chocolate sauce and salted butter. While the overall taste is rather meh, the special effect is definitely Instagram-worthy!
